NMAA Rules of Eligibility
Eligibility as stipulated by the New Mexico Activities Association is year round. Students who do not maintain academic eligibility may be ruled ineligible for competition in NMAA Sanctioned events. For the brevity of this handbook the following is only an abbreviation of the entire eligibility rules. 6.2.1 Extracurricular Activities – Student Participation A. Academic Eligibility 1. A Student shall have a 2.0 grade point average with no F’s, based on a 4.0 grading scale, or its equivalent, for the semester grading period immediately preceding participation. For students not eligible at the semester, the next six or nine week grading period can be used to regain eligibility. Grades earned during a summer session must be placed on a student’s transcript by the school registrar prior to the first day of the Fall semester in order for the course to be utilized for eligibility purposes (NMAA Section VI Eligibility bylaws may be found in completion at the following link) https://www.nmact.org/file/Section_6.pdf f)
Wildcat Band Rules of Eligibility
In addition to the NMAA Rules of Eligibility, the Wildcat Band will have additional rules constituting eligibility for extracurricular band activities such as field trips, band trips, non-NMAA sanctioned competitions, and those events not directly related to the educational right of the student, i.e football games, basketball games, and other events, particularly those requiring travel.
Rules of Eligibility
● Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA with no more than one F during the timeframe of an event to maintain eligibility for participation.
● Students having received appointments to a Band Leadership Team or Band Council Position must maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum with no F’s at all times. Failure to maintain it will result in a suspension of duties until it is fixed.
● In special circumstances, a student may petition the Director of Bands for a waiver of academic compliance in the event of unforeseen circumstances arising at school or home that have caused any academic failure.
● Continuous failure to meet eligibility standards will result in a parent teacher conference to discuss a plan of action to remediate the situation. Band is a team sport and excessive absences due to ineligibility are a high priority. Because Band is a group activity, each individual student is vital to the overall presentation of the marching and concert programs. Accordingly, maintaining student academic eligibility is of the highest importance, not only for the individual student but also for the Band as a whole.
A special concern for Freshmen: Incoming Freshmen students may be particularly vulnerable to academic difficulties as they make the transition from middle school to high school. Accordingly, parents of freshmen need to be especially alert as to how their students are handling high school work and band work together from the outset. 20 We strongly encourage parents to make contact with teachers during Open House and maintain constant communication, especially in the first six weeks of school. Please check canvas regularly, don’t wait to see Progress Reports. If a band student is having difficulty in a class, tutoring by other band students can be done on an informal basis. Many outstanding students are in the band; they have knowledge in areas where others may have need of assistance and may be willing to provide support.
